Mildred Charlap Cohen
20th C. Modernist Painter

My maternal grandmother, Mildred Charlap Cohen, was a great painter who declined to show her art when asked to do so.

Like other family members — she was too humble.

Mildred Charlap was an intuitive, painterly painter who created beautiful surfaces and subtle forms. There is natural choreography and musicality in her art.

Mildred Charlap's nephew — my first cousin once removed — was Mark "Moose" Charlap — the Broadway and Movie Score Composer. Moose was one of the great composers of American Popular Music, but he tragically died of Diabetes in his 40s, which prevented him from composing a large body of musical scores.

Herbert Cohen, my Grandfather, was her only love.

My Grandparents — like my parents — were a faithfully married devoted couple.

She was rarely ever sick.

She died of old age in her 90s.
